Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to the most common questions about 8000m expeditions.

Preparation & Training

How long should I train for my first 8000m peak?

We recommend 12-18 months of dedicated training for your first 8000m attempt. This includes 6 months of base fitness building, followed by 6-12 months of altitude-specific training with at least one 6000m+ training peak.

What previous climbing experience do I need?

Minimum requirements: Multiple trekking peaks (5000m+), basic mountaineering course completion, at least one technical 6000m+ peak, and experience with crampons, ice axe, and rope work in alpine conditions.

Which 8000m peak should I attempt first?

Cho Oyu is universally considered the best first 8000m peak due to its non-technical route, excellent acclimatization profile, and high success rate. Shishapangma is also suitable for those wanting more technical challenge.

Expedition Details

What's included in the expedition cost?

All-inclusive from Kathmandu: permits, Sherpa support (1:2 ratio), all meals, accommodation, group climbing gear, satellite communication, medical kit, and helicopter evacuation insurance up to base camp.

What gear do I need to bring vs. what's provided?

You provide: personal climbing gear (boots, suit, harness), personal items, and insurance. We provide: tents, ropes, anchors, group safety equipment, oxygen, masks, regulators, and base camp facilities.

What's the Sherpa-to-climber ratio?

We maintain a 1:2 Sherpa-to-client ratio for all 8000m expeditions. Each Sherpa has summited their assigned peak multiple times and carries additional oxygen, safety equipment, and emergency gear.

Safety & Medical

What medical screening is required?

Comprehensive medical evaluation including cardiac stress test, pulmonary function test, ophthalmologic exam, and physician clearance for high-altitude activity. We also recommend altitude chamber testing.

What happens in case of emergency?

Satellite communication for immediate rescue coordination, helicopter evacuation insurance to base camp, trained medical personnel on team, and established evacuation protocols with local authorities and international rescue organizations.

What's your policy on turning back?

Safety always comes first. Our guides have full authority to turn climbers around based on weather, health, or safety concerns. We'd rather have you return safely to attempt another peak than risk your life for any summit.
